SEO Knowledge Base - Search Engine Optimization

JavaScript

The use of JavaScript can look fantastic on your web page, though an excessive use of Java will often hinder a search engine spider. This in turn will lower your chances of being indexed by the engines. This practice is usually seen as the most common reason why your pages may not be indexed. If your web page URLs are embedded in JavaScript, most of the search engines will not recognize them and will not index these pages at all.

If you are serious about getting your pages indexed by the search engines and wish to obtain a good position on the MAJOR search engines such as AltaVista, Lycos, Go Network, Excite, Yahoo and many others, you must consider changing your website. You can achieve this by either placing the links on your pages in simple .HTML format or by including alternative links at the bottom of your pages just for the search engines to spider and navigate through.

There shouldn't be any serious problems in using JavaScript on your page. There are infact many important advantages to incorporating it into your site, though don't overdo it. Try to keep your page as simple as possible when it comes to HTML, and try and use more tables and less images, and use JavaScript only where it is necessary. Constructing an entire page from JavaScript can make you almost invisible in most of the major search engines these days.
